GOLDEN MILK AKA TURMERIC LATTE

2/01/2017

We've all heard of the craze that is going on with Turmeric and all the fun ways to incorporate it into our dietMy personal favourite is -  Golden Milk. (or as some might know it as Turmeric Latte) Not only is it an interesting change from the lattes I call a norm but it's health benefits just make it a plus. This aromatic drink is a mixture of either fresh or powdered turmeric mixed in with milk. Curcumin as most of us well know, is bright yellow/orange in colour and has a very pungent taste,  for this not many are fans of this superfood as a result, adding it with milk helps to subtle the taste slightly and makes ingesting the spice more pleasant or tolerable for some. This drink can be altered in different ways by adding various spices along with the main ingredient from ginger, cinnamon, coconut oil, nutmeg, pumpkin spice, honey .. the ingredients list is pretty much endless. Add anything that fancies your taste buds, the above are some spices that I just love and I know would correlate nicely. For me, adding pumpkin spice to this latte, is a perfect way to incorporate various spices and keep this drink sharp.  You can find my homemade pumpkin spice recipe here where you can make your own mix and store it for various drinks and snacks. Black pepper is a crucial spice when, as incorporating it into our beverage helps the turmeric absorption in our body. Turmeric gets into our metabolism faster than our body gets to absorb it. Research, shows that black pepper consists of Piperine, a compound which is known to make turmeric more bioavailable and allows us to soak up more benefits from the super spice. (Read below for the benefits)

 INGREDIENTS:

x1 heaped tsp of turmeric powder ( or freshly grated)
x0.5tsp pumpkin spice
x1pinch of black pepper
x1 cup milk of your choice
(I use almond milk but it is popular with coconut milk)
x0.5tsp  honey

HOW TO:

Quite frankly, how to make this beverage is pretty self-explanatory but it never hurts to go all the way , plus seeing the colours merge together is actually quite a pretty process. (perhaps more in action than in a still photo)

Start by adding the milk into a pan, you don't want the milk to burn fast so put it on a low to medium heat. Once the Milk has slightly warmed up add the spices, so that it will be easier for them to infuse.

I have decided to add some honey, just for a sweeter taste however this is totally optional. Quite frankly as much as I love coconut oil - adding it with hot milk just didn't work right, or at least for me, to each his own.

DISCLAIMER: Depending on how much Turmeric and the spices you add in, the colour of the milk could vary. Don't be alarmed if your latte turns out darker than the below picture. it's not the first time, the cinnamon or pumpkin spice over powered the turmeric signature colour.

Nonetheless, the taste will be there. I hope you enjoy this drink. I wouldn't go ahead and say that I drink this religiously on a daily basis however, I have adopted to drink it every other day, and I genuinely look forward to it, almost as much as I look forward to my coffee (emphasis on the almost, no drink can take away my love for coffee.)

Have you guys tried golden milk yet?  If you're yet to try it, let me know if its love at first taste or if it will take adjusting!

BENEFITS OF TURMERIC MILK:

SOOTHES SORE THROATS AND COLDS

This is how I got introduced to this beauty, I was unwell for a few days, and I was researching home remedies to cure a sore throat - I suffer often from tonsillitis and most recently of wisdom teeth, incorporating this drink and making it an essential has helped immensely. Turmeric acts as an anti-inflammatory and antiseptic, it helps to fight off the infection and to ease the pain. Also, the more you drink this regularly- the more your chances of getting sick will decrease. Try it for yourself!

ANTI-AGEING & FACIAL PROPERTIES

This is due to the anti-oxidant benefits that drinking golden milk contains. It helps to reduce oxidative stress as well as inflammation which are two elements that don't help the ageing process. Turmeric combined with Black pepper also aids in soothing the skin and helping get rid of unwanted acne, due to it's anti-inflammatory properties.

INDIGESTION

Tired of constantly feeling bloated?  Let's just say that turmeric helps to reduce any indigestion symptoms as well as stomach pains that we often suffer from as well as  alleviates heart burn. It aids those who suffer from IBS =  Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY

I have already mentioned anti-inflammatory properties in regards to the skin, but I somehow feel that it deserves it's own title. Curcumin is required and known to help various conditions. Two of which are to help those who suffer from arthritis, as well as promotes brain function which helps to prevent Alzheimer's and keep our memory and cognition intact.

PROMOTES HEALTHY SLEEP

Golden Milk is commonly drank before bed, it helps to relax and unwind after a long day. Curcumin helps to set you into a deeper sleep, to fully recuperate and wake up energised -  let's just say you feel golden the next day!

A FEW EXTRA ADDED BENEFITS:

WEIGHT LOSS (BURNS FAT CELLS)
LOWERS & PROMOTES CHOLESTEROL
INCREASES FERTILITY
ANTICANCER PROPERTIES

And so much more beneficial reasons to drink up ... you can even add it to your beauty regimen but I'll save that one for another day!
