Hummus

8/24/2017

I don't think I've crossed paths with a single person who doesn't love hummus... if I do in the near future, I am simply not interested in getting to know them. Jokes, I'll befriend them anyway and they'll come to grow a love for hummus through our friendship .. that's actually not a joke. Right, being serious for a second. This Middle-East Origin dip is my all time favourite and for those who are unaware it's primarily made from sesame seed paste which is normally blended together with chickpeas and lemon juice along with other ingredients. Once blended, this becomes a thick and creamy mixture which is suitable to compliment with many different food groups, it is also common to be incorporated into salads and  the base of wraps but for the majority it is mutually known to be the best for snacking during or in between meals. Most of us all seem to subtract a category from our diets nowadays, whether we're meat-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten-free .. let me tell you - fortunately I can guarantee that this mixture is NOT taste-free; and it's the dish which suits ALL diets. Yes,  so go ahead and spread that shit  everywhere!

I simply get nostalgic every time I eat hummus, it takes me back to my first year of university when I was living at campus for the simple fact that it used to be my staple dinner. You know how the first year goes you are settling in, doing freshers week which we all know lasts longer than just the first week, whilst also adjusting to your schedule, we don't always find the time to cook and well I'm not kidding when I say at least once a week (if not twice) I would make homemade hummus by just adding everything in a food mixer and  toast 2-3 pittas and presto, basta my din dins was done in under five minutes. I'd hop right into bed, after a long day and cuddle up in my quilt in the warmth on a cold winters night. I'd put on Family Guy or South Park on a loop which was the norm for me back then and just tuck into this big bowl of hummus with veggie crudités along with my warm toasted pittas. Hands down it made one of my best university moments to date, I used to love the small weekly rituals I arranged for myself. Food really does bring you some of the happiest moments.

It is seriously so tasty which I'm not going to emphasise on as I am sure that the majority of you can vouch that for yourselves however, what I can assert is that it is also so nutritious for the body. It's naturally a plant-based food which is high in protein and fibre, has the right amount of healthy fats due to the sesame paste which will allow to keep you fuller for longer. Hummus is also known to balance the hormones as it contains oestrogen due to the chickpeas and is also considered to be anti-inflammatory which can be beneficial to many. You don't have to be a  non - meat eater to enjoy this.. You need a quick pick me up? You're set! Look no further.

INGREDIENTS:

-x1 can of chickpeas
-x1 tbsp of Tahini
-x1/2 cloves of garlic
-x1tsp cumin
-x1tsp paprika
-x1.5 tbsp of water *
-x1/2 squeeze of lemon

*You need to add a bit of water this is to help all the ingredients to mix together. However, I do recommend that you start adding your water gradually. This will allow you to monitor the consistency of your dip. If you prefer it to be on the thick side don't add to much water if you prefer it to be a bit more liquidy then go ahead and add as much water as you desire. I more or less added about 1.5tbsp and left it to become in between a rough and smooth mixture which is just right.

DISCLAIMER: As you could see in the below picture: I actually incorporated x3 garlic cloves, I went a little crazy with garlic as I love it and add it in most of my food. However, I do admit it might have been a little bit too over empowering in comparison to the other ingredients, and even though I enjoyed it nonetheless, the next time I will definitely add perhaps 1-2 just to dial down the kick. If you do decide to keep it to x3 it's equally as delicious. I just don't recommend you go kissing anyone afterwards or for a while ha ha! Ahh you gotta love garlic.

This is going to be pretty
self-explanatory.

Most people, are wary of this dip for a few simple reasons:

1) You've never tried it. You hate and don't eat many vegetables to begin with, or the thought of chickpeas mashed together with sesame paste must throw you way off and you can't possibly imagine how it could taste any good.

OR

2) The ones you've tried just didn't give it justice. I personally have tasted quite a few odd tasting hummus in my days and that's because they were mostly all store bought especially when you buy them with various flavours. We all get the lazy days of not even wanting to shove a number of ingredients into a food mixer - guilty! But I can assure you it's worth the 10 minutes when the taste excels way more. I can't stress enough that especially for hummus - always go for a homemade batch, you can 100% guarantee what's in it, no funny ingredients and for the price of one pot you can buy the ingredients to make it more than once. Once you've got the hang of a classic you can even have fun and add your favourite flavours in - kalamata olive hummus is next on my list.. I've never tired it but I predict it will be: YUM!

What's your favourite type of hummus?
Mine the classic way is by far my all time favourite!
